Five minutes to your first timed string
You do not have to read this book to use the app. This page gets you timing; everything
after it explains why, and what else there is.
First — how to open the menu on a watch
Two of the steps below start with Menu, and it is not obvious where that is if
the watch is new to you:
- Garmin — press and hold the UP button (marked MENU on some
models) while Shot Clock is open. On touchscreen watches you can instead swipe up
from the bottom of the screen; a small indicator on the edge shows the menu is
there.
- Apple Watch — swipe right on the main timer screen.
Quick start
From installed to shooting
- Install it
Watch Garmin: the Connect IQ Store, through Garmin
Connect Mobile. Apple Watch: it arrives with the iPhone app.
Phone App Store or Google Play.
- Pick the device you are setting up
Watch Nothing to pick — you are on it.
Phone Tap the gear on the bottom bar, tap the top
row, and choose your watch — or This Phone if you have none.
- Turn on the match you shoot
Watch Menu › Select Matches — switch on
the family, then the match inside it.
Phone The Sequences tab — same two steps, then
tap Save.
Turn everything else off: several matches reuse the same numbers for
different timing.
- Choose a sequence
Watch On the main screen, swipe up and down, or press
the Up and Down buttons.
Phone Tap the Timer icon, then swipe up and
down.
The big number is how long that stage runs for.
- Set sound or vibration
Watch Menu › Sound and
Menu › Vibration.
Phone Timer › gear › Sound.
Decide now, not on the firing line. Indoors, most people run vibration
only.
- Start it
Watch Press the Select button, or tap the
screen.
Phone Press and hold — about half a second.
Let it run to zero and listen to what it does.
That is genuinely all of it
Everything past this point is optional. You can shoot a whole season on what is above
and never open this book again — or work through Section 9 for the same thing at
walking pace, with the reasons attached.
Which kind of shooter are you?
This manual covers two apps, four kinds of device and a website. Almost nobody needs all
of it. Find yourself below and skip the rest — you can always come back.
Two books in one
Parts I and II are the onboarding — read them once and you are set up.
Everything from Part III on is reference: dip in when you want a feature, not
cover to cover.
